Taking a Break

Hey gang!

How is everyone doing? It’s only been 2 weeks, but it feels like forever!

I took the 2 weeks off as planned. Grad school started on the 29th of August and now today is September 11th…

In the past two weeks, I have worked out about 4 times. Yeah…. it’s sad.

My schedule for GMU:

Monday 2 three hour classes in Fairfax 10:30am-4:30pm

Tuesday internship in Stafford 8am to 5pm

Wednesday 3 three hour classes in Fairfax 10:30am-7:30pm (I’m a zombie on Wednesdays)

Thursday internship in Stafford 8am to 5pm

So, technically I can try workouts around these times… but this past 2 weeks I discovered that I was using extra time after class and Fridays to write papers, get reading completed, etc.

I’m afraid that grad school wins. I cannot efficiently or effectively run a gym at this crazy time in my life.

If you’re interested in nightly workouts or 7am workouts or Sunday commissary runs on base, let me know. I’ll still do these things for myself (sporadically), but I do not want to have it be a concrete/set-in-stone business.

So, good luck with your future training! I have resources for other trainers and CrossFit gyms in the area if you’re interested. Obviously, let’s stay in touch!!

Now… back to my Lit Review…

Love always!

P.S. I LOVE Social Work. I really feel like this program is just for me. Although I’m sad to leave fitness training behind – I believe God has wired me for this type of profession.

Runstock Photos

Runstock was a great event! The music, the bands on every corner, the swag, the course — kudos to the Marine Corps Marathon team for putting on a well organized race.

Old Schoolers: Nate, Tara (couldn't run but came out to support!), Thera, Ray, Amy, Cori, Marty, Angie, Aaron, Evan

Our group had a fun evening – as some of us ran as a group to cheer each other on while others pushed for a personal best. We also turned quite a few heads in our brightly tie dyed shirts! (and socks!)

The tie dyed socks went up higher on my legs than on Nate's....whoops!

Everyone had a great run. The best Personal Record of the night goes to Amy – who jogged the entire 5K without stopping! She said that before training with Old School Fitness, she couldn’t have jogged a quarter of a mile without getting winded or stopping to walk. Way to go, Amy!

Amy, Thera and Cori

I’m proud of all of my members. You guys make my life very fulfilling!

Prepping for Runstock

A handful of Old Schoolers will be participating in Runstock tonight. We have been “training” for several months now. And yesterday, we tie dyed OSFC t-shirts so we can show up in style!

This race will have live music around every corner. At the end there will be BBQ and a beer garden. We’re all pretty stoked about it!

Don’t Drop Your Baby

We had a workout during the 5:30pm class this week called “Don’t drop your baby.”

Athletes got a sandbag or a medicine ball (their “baby”) and had to climb to the top of the hill, do 10 squats (holding their baby on their shoulder, back or anywhere they felt it was the most efficient), and go back down the hill for one round. The workout called for 10 rounds. And if you dropped your baby, you had to do 5 burpees.

It turned out to be a great workout, and a lot of fun! Well, “fun” in that “I like pain” kind of a way. None of the athletes had to do burpees. They held on to their babies for dear life!

And it was especially cool because a thunder storm was rolling in :)

Puppies Bring Happiness To Workouts

Moving to the neighborhood and garage has made the classes much smaller and more intimate… which has actually been really nice! Each class averages 3 athletes. We’re really getting to know each other – and that includes our kids and our pets!

Andrea and Adam who come to the 5:30pm class just got a new Golden Retriever puppy, Emma. She is hilarious, uncoordinated and goofy. And she always keeps us smiling while we’re working out. I think I’ve decided she’s going to be Old School’s Gym Mascot.

The summer has been hot – but it’s been such a blessing to coach such beautiful and dedicated athletes… and their “little ones.”

Emma still loves you even if you're sweaty!

Summer Break

With summer comes some changes for Old School Fitness Club. I’ll be focusing more on the Stroller Mom/Morning fitness classes as well as some smaller classes (less than 5 athletes) and one-on-one sessions for the next 2 months. Downsizing helps compensate for summer vacations and prepare for grad school, which I will start in the Fall. If you have any questions or are interested in joining, please contact me! therastorm@gmail.com

Stroller Class: 9AM (Fitness training but kids are invited!)

Fitness/Weight training: 12:00 Noon

Fitness/Weight training: 5:30PM

Thanks! And Happy Summer!

Our Very Own Spartan

Shorty went Old, Old, OLD school by competing in the Spartan Race 2 weekends ago. Details of the obstacle race HERE.

Steven AKA “Shorty” not only finished the race (when 100′s did not) but he placed in the TOP 40 out of 2,000+ participants! He said Old School Fitness Club was the perfect environment for training (physically and mentally) to compete in this badass race!

Congrats, Shorty!

Women love a strong athlete

Working out in 100 degree weather

102 degrees outside! Took this picture from inside my car on the way to the gym the other day!

Summer came hard, hot and fast this summer. It seemed like only yesterday we were doing burpees just to warm up from the winter weather. Now, we’re stripping our clothes off and slipping on a wet floor caused by our own sweat.

The building is cooler up front so we’ve moved our equipment up  there. It’s still pretty hot – so I made a list (three helpful hints) that will make intense working out in intense heat a little more effective. In addition, avoiding heat exhaustion is always a good idea.

1. Hydrate all day long. Avoid a lot of coffee and other flavored drinks during the day. You want to be well hydrated (with WATER) before you even walk into the gym doors. If the first water you drink all day is when you come to the gym – you are going to be in trouble.

2. Bring a water bottle with you. We have cool water in the water fountains up front – but you’ll want to make sure you fill up your bottle before the workout begins, so your water is within reach at all times.

3. Your body cools itself by sweating. Make this easier by wearing the right clothing. Wear light, loose fitting workout gear. Avoid pants and long sleeves.

Much love!
